Your Ancestors Didn't Think it was Weird to Connect with Ancestors
One of my goals this last year was to deepen my newly established connection with my ancestors who are well in spirit.
Growing up, I was taught that invoking or speaking to the dead was a sin against God. (queue booming voice and thunder)
I remember as a child feeling equal parts terrified and curious about mediums, those who can communicate with spirits who have passed on. No one ever told me why it was forbidden, and the few bible verses that mention it fail to elaborate.
The church culture I was part of for a long time didn't appreciate me asking probing questions, especially of a feminist nature, and intuitive gifts tend to manifest in many women. In fact, neuroscience researcher Dr. Lisa Miller, says women are hardwired to be open to spirituality and spiritual gifts. So outlawing spirit communication resulted in a disproportionate amount of women being taught to suppress and deny this part of their humanity.
Just follow the rules, believe the right things, and you’ll have the great mercy of going to heaven when you die (even though you’re completely undeserving, you filthy, sinful wretch, you).
If you weren’t aware of how the books of the Bible were brought together and canonized, you might find this really interesting, maybe even worldview-shifting:
Around 300 CE, hundreds of years after Jesus lived, healed, taught, and was murdered, there were several councils of powerful religious men who decided what should be included in the Bible. Around this time Constantine, the Roman Emperor, made it the official religion and held his own Council of Nicaea where he and a bunch of Church leaders molded Christianity it to fit their own agenda.
Did they really believe in the teachings of Jesus?
Well...one can assume not. Based on their actions, it's clear that these dudes were not "bearing the fruits of the spirit."
Any teaching that was contrary to the approved religious laws were treated as heresy, punishable by the Church and State.
This is why the Bible emphasizes scripture that suppresses women, keeps men in positions of authority, and aims to control and vilify intuitive gifts, such as mediumship. Gifts that resonate with sacred feminine energy.
It was all about control.
And it stripped so much away from the human experience. In a lot of ways it severed our connection to the Earth, to the spirits we share this realm with, and to the divine spark within us.
It stripped us of our spiritual power.
As I continue the work of healing these wounds within myself and my family, I’ve felt a strong pull to reestablish these broken connections. Each step I take has brought me more and more into my power and awakened my intuition.
In spring of 2025 I felt my guides telling me to reconnect with the wisdom of my ancestors. Not the recent dead. Not the colonizers. Nor the crusaders.
The ancient ancestors who still maintained a strong connection to Source, spirits, and the Earth. Following their guidance, my fabulous business partner and Soul Sister, Joi, and I enrolled in a course by Dr. Daniel Foor called Ancestral Lineage Healing. ![]()
I could tell you so many stories of the mysterious and wonderful things that have happened since I connected with my loving and wise ancient ancestors, but please trust me when I say, this shit is real.
And if you think it’s weird or scary to talk to the dead, remember that this was just a regular part of life for all of our lineages if we trace them back far enough. Those in power have tried to control us by taking away this sacred gift. They have taught us to police ourselves by calling it weird, woo, or evil. It’s time we stop letting them manipulate us out of our own precious humanity.
The healthy, vibrant ancient ones are waiting to reconnect with us. They want to help.
One recent conversation with a guide I lovingly call Grandfather, perfectly illustrates this point.
I was very hesitant and guarded while working with a lineage of men, and I knew he could sense that. I suppose I was expecting to meet someone stern and maybe authoritarian, so I was surprised and relieved in those early connection rituals when I instead felt waves of love coming from him. He felt so boisterous, cheerful, playful…and fatherly. He filled my mind’s eye with an image of the Spirt of Christmas Present from Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol and then told me, very clearly, that I needed to heal my relationship with the Divine Masculine.
And how was I to do this? Simply allow myself to be loved by a big, powerful, fatherly force. And try to sit in that loving presence as long as I could manage it.
Sounds funny to say, but sitting in a laser beam of high vibration love can be a little uncomfortable, especially if there are parts of us that still struggle to believe we deserve it. We've got our healing work cut out for us here in Earth School.
I’ll wrap up with this thought: we are here to witness and participate in the rise of the Divine Feminine…but that will also set the Divine Masculine free, as well.
The patriarchy hurts all of us. And it’s the rich and powerful motherfuckers at the top who want to keep it that way. Will we continue to let them?
One way you can reclaim your divine human heritage is to reconnect to your ancient ancestors. We’re gonna need their help as systems of oppression crumble and a new world is made. I recommend starting with Daniel Foor’s book, Ancestral Medicine. I swear I wasn't paid to say that. I just really believe in this work, and I'm ready for us to have our power back.
